Review – Come Closer by Brenda Rothert

****Please note….to avoid all spoilers and to avoid probably one of the most surprising plot twists I have ever read, this review will be short on detail so I can be very care not to ruin it for anyone.  It will, however, tell you exactly how it made me feel…****

OK…I have to be honest, I’ve been reading a slew of new-to-me authors and haven’t had much luck.  I truthfully had never heard of Brenda Rothert until she paired up to write a series with Chelle Bliss last year.  Holy smoking goodness!  Shame on ME!!!  What a hidden gem she is, one that shines brightly and flawlessly.  Come Closer so completely refreshing in both plot line and human emotional endurance.  The chemistry between our heroine and hero is palpable and scorching…but not in a way you expect at first.  It’s their emotional bond that is the focus of this book and it was so beautiful and pure, it took my breath away.  This book had such a different story line to it, I was sure there was  no way this would work for me, but this author has a talent with her words and the ability to sweep you to a new dimension in which time and distance and boundaries have no meaning.  The superbly written characters were brutally honest and it made their stories so gut-wrenching, I was moved to tears on more than one occasion.  It moved at a brisk pace that was easy to keep up with.  The moments between our hero and heroine were passionate and fierce, their devotion to each other complete and with no limits.  The plot twist was of epic proportions…normally plot twists can kill a story or make it and this one makes the story even more dynamic.  Surprisingly, there were more than one!!!  You can expect so much with this one book…love, danger, violence, sex (wow…when it happens, it is just magnificent), secondary characters who will leave you gasping and aching in both triumph and tragedy, and probably one of the most romantic and spectacular happy endings you will ever have the pleasure of reading.  Where this author has been hiding my whole life is beyond me but if this is just a taste of her work, I’m pretty sure her stories could become my new addiction.  Come Closer is so thought-provoking and real…there are no words to do it justice and it moved me on so many levels, I had to take a day to recover.  I rarely buy paperback books anymore but I’m buying this one.  It’s earned a place on my keeper shelves and is probably one of the best books I have ever read.  I recommend it to every reader, no matter the genre of your preference.  It’s guaranteed to touch you and stay with you for the rest of your life.  5 stars don’t do it justice…more like 10.

Book Blurb:

Sometimes appearances deceive. Take me, for instance. I look like a respectable doctor with his shit together, but the rural Montana mental hospital I work at is actually a sanctuary from my demons. At just thirty-five years old, I’ve already failed on an epic scale. Treating patients at Hawthorne Hill is part of my atonement.
I’ve found peace when a new patient turns me inside out. Allison Cole is a beautiful, haunted survivor who fell into silence after witnessing a murder. But even without words, I’m drawn to her. The closer we get, the more I’m tempted to cross my professional boundaries and give in to my desire.
Soon I find myself in a desperate race to put the pieces of Allison’s silence together. Her life becomes inextricably entwined with mine as I fight to save the second chance I never thought I’d have. I’ll break whatever rules I have to in order to protect this woman who’s been to hell and back. For her, I’ll do harm.
