Review – Dangerous Witness by Katie Reus

REVIEW:

I very much enjoyed Dangerous Witness by Katie Reus.  While this is romantic suspense, and in most cases the suspense overshadows the romance, I felt this was ultimately a story of second chances and forgiveness, with Brooks’ treatment of Darcy and her path to forgiving him being the bigger part of the suspense.  This was not a bad thing!  Brooks and Darcy were happily dating when Brooks makes a huge mistake.  Really, talk about sticking your foot in your mouth!  I can understand his thoughts but I was a little heartbroken that he believed someone who was at best, unreliable, over Darcy.  But, he does and it destroys Darcy.  I liked Brooks.  Apart from his lapse in judgement, he was quite alpha and blatantly heroic.  He realizes pretty quick that he made a huge error and his path to forgiveness with the love of his life is both sweet and scintillating.  Hey, if all else fails, knock her off her feet with sexual chemistry!  Darcy was wrecked by Brooks and his assumptions but she forges on.  Now, I really, really liked Darcy!  She was motivated and strong.  She stood by her convictions and didn’t let Brooks treat her like a doormat.  She is also brutally honest and what you see if what you get with her.  It made her a wonderful heroine to read.  She overhears something she shouldn’t have and funnels that information to a trusted source….a co-worker of Brooks (and her newest client).  When Brooks finds out she’s in danger….yep, he becomes extremely motivated to protect Darcy at all costs.  These two have some great chemistry.  I loved the push and pull of their relationship and that Darcy didn’t make it easy for Brooks, but she didn’t kill him with guilt trips either.  Huge bonus….she is NOT too stupid to live (grrrrr…I hate heroine’s like that).  She takes the situation, and her safety, seriously at all costs.  This leads to a beautiful reconciliation, but not without some drama and a little bit of angst.  The plot was well written and flowed smoothly, with no hiccups in the storyline or confusing scenarios (a huge downer in a romantic suspense).  The ending wasn’t surprising but also wasn’t predictable.  The sex scenes were hot and not overly done.  Brooks and Darcy’s love story was sensual and loving….with just a little bit of humor and a whole lot of romance.  The bad guys were bad (really, really bad) and the secondary characters well written and intriguing (I bought the previous books in this series, I enjoyed the characters so much).  Overall, I was highly impressed with the writing of Ms. Reus and her ability to pen a romantic suspense that didn’t give me a tension headache or sour stomach (thank you for the lack of gruesome crime scenes).  I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, but thankfully, I get the pleasure of going back and starting at the beginning to read the goodness I was missing. 4 stars!
