Review – Ryder by Barbara Freethy

Review:

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book by Ms. Freethy.  Very different from the hardcore, open bedroom scenes that are the norm for me, I can’t believe not only how much I liked the quiet sweetness of Ryder, but how much I’m looking forward to the next books in this series. Ryder is our hero and he has returned home to start his new business, never anticipating that his business would require he talk to the youngest Tucker, Bailey.  I really like Ryder.  He had a good heart and was a gentleman…both sweet and sexy.  I liked that he didn’t anticipate his attraction towards Bailey and the thrill of watching him discover that everything he never knew he wanted has always been right under his nose.  Bailey is our heroine and she is licking her wounds in her hometown…the one place she thought she would never return to.  Bailey is sassy and smart but a little beaten down after a rather nasty experience in her personal and professional life.  The last thing she ever expected was to find safety in the arms of her families longstanding enemy….a Westbrook.  But these two find there may be many reasons for them to take the lead to show their families that burying the hatchet may be a good thing…the chief being that they didn’t expect to find the other half of heart lying with one another.  Their banter and easy camaraderie was cute and funny and was an aphrodisiac of it’s own kind.  Them falling in love was like watching a romantic comedy…you knew they were going to and you couldn’t wait to see the happy ending but you enjoyed every minute of the journey getting there.  This book was sexy but tasteful…with chaste kisses and closed door sex scenes.  I won’t lie, it is predictable (really, I saw this ending coming a mile away) but still delivers a wonderfully sweet story of love and forgiveness and making things right for the future.  Most of all, this book made me feel extremely good and slightly love-buzzed when I finished it.  It also had me anticipating the next story in this series.  Ms. Freethy did not disappoint and I can’t wait to see what the next book brings.  4 stars.

EXCERPT

Prologue

“We’re hit! We’re hit!”

Navy pilot Ryder Westbrook heard the panicked words of his copilot, Michael Valdez, but he was too busy trying to regain control of the SH-60 Seahawk helicopter to reply. They were coming back from a humanitarian mission—having dropped food, water and medical supplies into the rugged and remote villages of Afghanistan—when they’d taken enemy fire.

They weren’t going to make it back to the carrier in the Persian Gulf. They were going to have to set down somewhere, hopefully far from the rebel forces that had just shot at them.

His heart pounded against his chest, but he remained calm, his training playing through his head as he went through every option to retain control of the twin-engine helicopter.

Flying was in his blood. The helo had always felt like an extension of his own power, but now that power was crumbling, and he was being forcibly reminded of just how fragile life could be.

But he couldn’t quit. There had to be a way out.

Unfortunately, his optimism was dampened by the fact that the ground was getting closer by the second, and his crew was depending on him to get them down safely.

His copilot had a wife and a baby back in the States. Colin Forbes, the sensor operator, was getting married in a month. And he…well, he still had things he wanted to do.

He had to keep them all alive.

Searching the ground for a viable landing site, he spotted what appeared to be a flat, open rural area. Not only did he want to protect his crew, he didn’t want to hurt anyone on the ground.

Glancing over at Michael, he saw his friend making the sign of the cross.

“We’re not going to die,” he said emphatically, drawing Michael’s gaze to his. “Not today. Not this time.”

He could see the hope in Michael’s eyes. His friend wanted to believe him.

Hell, he wanted to believe himself.

He’d been in tight spots before, and he’d always come out on top. It had been that way his entire life. Growing up in Eagle’s Ridge, he’d been the golden boy—the one who set new records, who made things happen, who achieved whatever he went after.

But this was real life. This was happening now, and he was the only one who could save all their lives.

In ten years of naval service, he’d never encountered a situation exactly like this. He’d never felt so worried that his number might really be up.

He shook the negative thought out of his head, squaring his jaw, tightening his hand on the controls, as he rode the bird down to the ground.

The impact was harder than he’d expected, the helicopter shattering into pieces of fiery metal. And when everything went black, he fought against the idea that this might be it.

He had more he wanted to do, people he should have made peace with a long time ago, a home that beckoned to him—the Blue Mountains, the Snake River, the people of Eagle’s Ridge—a life still to be lived.

He needed more time… He just didn’t know if he was going to get it.

Review – Perilous Trust by Barbara Freethy

Review:

This book had so much suspense, it gave me a headache, but of the best kind.  This was the first book I have read by Barbara Freethy, but it will not be the last.  Damon, our hero, is dark and twisty and very closed off from any type of commitment to anything other than his job and his friends.  But in a moment of pure weakness, he comes across our heroine, Sophie and together these two get lost in each other.  Fast forward 4 years and these two thought they would never see each other again but Sophie’s father is Damon’s boss and mentor and their lives are thrown together once more.  I really enjoyed the character of Damon, although he’s in a little bit more in denial about his feelings towards Sophie than I normally like in my heroes.  I was a little apprehensive about him, honestly, but he quickly grew on me, especially given his commitment to keep Sophie safe.  However, I fell head-over-heels in love with him when he made a choice I did not see coming.  Sophie is reeling after the death of her father.  But this girl is made of some pretty stern stuff.  I love smart and determined heroines and Sophie was one of kind….brilliant and completely real.  She had no idea of her strength and honestly, as the hits kept coming, I myself would have just sat down and cried.  But not Sophie.  She just keeps on going.  There was not as much chemistry between our characters at the very beginning but it quickly went from a low smolder to an out of control blaze….especially when they are running for their lives.  I loved seeing their relationship progress from one-night-stand-long-ago to can’t-live-without-you-must-have-you-now.  It was truly raw and honest.  This book had a great plot, full of action and suspense.   There are some great secondary characters who I can’t wait to have their stories told.  The plot twists were pretty awesome and even better, I couldn’t figure out who the actual bad guy was (something suspense books frequently give away before the end and a wonderful surprise when they don’t) and the ending was satisfying and happy.  Overall, I enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series! 4.5 stars.

“Why did you run away from your apartment, your friends, your father’s coworkers? Why did you just disappear, Sophie?” Damon asked.

“Because someone killed my dad.”

“It’s possible it was an accident.”

“You don’t believe that any more than I do.”

“Maybe not, but I think something specific spooked you.”

“You mean like the two men I saw going into my apartment building?”

“You saw the men who broke into your apartment?” he asked in surprise.

“I don’t know if they were the ones, but they could have been.”

“What did they look like?”

“Law enforcement, maybe—I don’t know.”

Damon stared back at her, and she could see him running through her words in his head. “Why would you be afraid of law enforcement when your father is FBI?”

“Gut instinct,” she lied, knowing she wouldn’t have been afraid at all if her father hadn’t told her to be. “And it looks like I was right to run. If I’d gone to my apartment, who knows what would have happened?”

His lips drew into a hard line. “Look, Sophie, I want to help you.”

“Why? Why on earth would you want to help me?”

His gaze darkened, and the air sizzled between them as they found themselves back in a place probably neither of them wanted to revisit, but they were there all the same.

“We’re not friends,” she said quickly, needing to break the tension. “We’re not anything. We haven’t seen each other in four years. Why do you care where I am, what I’m doing? Is it because of loyalty to my dad? That has to be it, right? Nothing else could have made you drive all the way up here.”

“I should have called you after that night,” he said.

“I’m not looking for an apology.”

“Aren’t you?”

“No. Maybe. No,” she said, hating to sound so uncertain. “None of that is important now. I have bigger problems.”

“Then let’s talk about now,” he said, relief in his eyes as he changed the subject. “I respected your father. He was a mentor to me. I owe him for that, and I know that he would want me to help you. He trusted me, and I hope you can trust me, too.”

“I don’t know if my father trusted you,” she said, shaking her head.

Surprise and anger flared in his eyes. “Why would you say that?”

“Because he told me not to trust anyone from the bureau, and since you’re an agent, that includes you. Please, just go. Just leave me alone,” she pleaded, desperate to get him out of the cabin before she did something even more stupid—like start to trust him. “I’ll disappear. I’ll go somewhere no one else knows about. You don’t have to worry about me. You’ve done your duty. You came after me. You did that for my dad. Now do something for me—leave me alone. You’ve managed it for four years. You can keep going.”

His mouth tightened. “I’m not leaving you alone. You won’t be safe. You can’t get help from a friend, because you’ll put them in danger, and even if you are very careful, you’ll make a mistake. You don’t know how to stay off the radar, but I do. You’re going to have to trust someone at some point. You’re going to have to put your anger aside and let it be me.”

Before she could answer, she was suddenly hit with a shower of glass from the nearby window.

What the hell had just happened?

Another pane blew out, and something whizzed by her ear.

Damon grabbed her arm and pulled down as a third window exploded.

Someone was shooting at her!
