Review – Fight For Her by Vanessa Vale

Review:

This book utterly wrecked me!  Seriously, I didn’t want to move out of my safe and lovely cocoon of happiness and emotion for HOURS after finishing this book.  Then, I did something rare….I picked the book back up and started over from page one.  Fight For Her was just that mind-blowingly FANTASTIC!!!  Our hero, Grayson, is dynamite, his passion for life just explodes from the very first word out of his mouth!  He is alpha male, smoking hot, and completely charming.  A fighter who has moved past his fighting days has now found something new to fight for…our charming and witty heroine, Emory.  I loved Emory.  She was a smart and classy woman who stood on her own, knew what she wanted, and wasn’t blown away by who Grayson was…or how much money he had.  The chemistry between these two was so erotic, my device spontaneously shut down twice (I’m gonna blame it on the chemistry…yep…not my battery dying).  This book was one long, drawn out lovemaking session…from the very moment Grayson “rescues” Emory until the very last sentence.  These two were clearly meant of each other, and no matter what they dealt with, it was very clear that they were soul mates.  I couldn’t get enough of them.  The plot was fantastic and kept me engaged every second.  The secondary characters brought the right amount of zest and humor to the book.  The sex scenes were mind blowing and erotic, not over-the-top or lacking in passion.  There was just enough suspense to keep you guessing and hooked without being to angsty or confusing. Truly, this book blew my socks off and sent me off on a mad dash to find any book I could by Vanessa (my previously over-flowing TBR is now bursting at the seams).  I’m dying to send a message to Ms. Vale and inquire about the next book in this series.  Because WOW. I can’t recommend this book enough.  5 stars!

About Sweet Victory:

Sophie Caldwell might not like asking for help, but help is what she needs if she’s going to save her family business from her uncle. Her grandma left one rule for Sophie if she wants to gain sole ownership before she’s thirty—get married. Yeah, fat chance of that happening since she hasn’t had a boyfriend in years, and now she can’t get her uncle off her ass.

British-born MMA fighter Xander James has never lost a fight, and he’s not about to start now. He’s on the brink of a comeback that could make him a UFC champion, but his landlord wants to take away his last chance by shutting down his gym. Hell, no. Fortunately, his landlord’s niece has a problem of her own. Time for a proposal she can’t refuse.

EXCERPT:

Xan’s body had tensed more with every minute he listened. Then Caldwell insulted Sophie, making Xander’s blood boil and his fists curl tight. The only thing she could do to stop the sale was get married, and the snide bastard flat out told her he didn’t believe for a second it would ever happen, now or ever.

What a bunch of bullshit. Xan would bet Sophie had men panting after her on the regular, and if her relationships didn’t last, it was probably because they couldn’t hold a candle to her raging fire.

That wouldn’t be the case if they ever got together, at least not in the bedroom. He would match her flame for flame until they incinerated everything around them. He’d been on the verge of letting those torrid images get the best of him again when the cruel words of her uncle smacked him back to the present.

“…the only way to acquire the trust is through a legitimate marriage. Considering your track record with men, I think we both know what the likelihood of that is.”

Fucking hell! To hear him speak so callously to a woman—his own niece—brought back painful memories of growing up hearing his father berate and belittle Xander’s mother. It’s why he often got involved in situations that were none of his business. He couldn’t stomach witnessing a woman being bullied.

Xan was going to make the tosser choke on his own words.

He stalked out to the front door, reached up, and flicked the little bell to signal his “arrival.” Turning around, he faced a perplexed Kristin who opened her mouth, presumably to ask if he’d fallen off his rocker. He held a finger up to his lips and shot her a look he hoped would brook no argument. She simply raised a single brow with interest.

Xan spoke loud enough for his voice to travel down the hallway to Sophie and her uncle. “Hello, Kristin, you’re looking lovely as ever,” he said, walking toward the hall. “Just popping in to see my girl after my run. Tell Billy I said hello, yeah?” Then he proceeded to eat up the short distance to reach the office.

Acting as though he had every right to barge in without knocking or asking for permission, he swung the door in wide just as she was approaching, hopefully to throw the asshole out of her office. Sophie’s chocolate eyes widened in surprise, her red-stained lips opening on a gasp.

“There you are, sweetheart.”

“Xander, what—”

That’s all she got out before his large hands took hold of her face and he slanted his mouth over hers for a claiming kiss. He wasn’t the sort of man to greet his woman with a chaste peck, but rather one of possession and ownership. One that marked her as his alone, without question, without challenge.

Only he hadn’t known that about himself until the moment his lips touched Sophie’s.

Mine. So fucking mine.

I lean against the tile with my arms spread, allowing the water to beat against my back. It’s too hot. I should turn it down, but I don’t bother. Eventually, like everything else, the sensation fades.

I’m not sure how long I’m in that position. A few seconds? A few minutes? But then Easton and his trainer Yefim are suddenly there. “You got lucky, O’Brien,” Yefim calls out, taunting me with his thick eastern European accent.

Shit. Like all the trash talk before the fight wasn’t enough.

“Did you hear me, you pussy?” he fires back when I don’t answer. “Did you hear me, you goddamn coward?”

Coward? Fuck you. It’s what I think, but not what I say, focusing instead on the streams of water that gather along my feet before they swirl into the drain.

It doesn’t help. The rage that’s building, the one I only manage to barely keep in? It stirs in my gut like a heavy pot filled with hate, sin, and all the curses my Ma would still beat my ass for saying.

“What’re you doing?” Yefim asks.

His voice is closer, he’s drawing near. I doesn’t matter that I’m standing here naked. He wants to be next to me. I shudder, that feeling I keep buried drilling its way up.

“I know about you,” Yefim says, not bothering to keep his voice low. “But everyone knows, don’t they? Even if you don’t want them to.”

My body shakes a little more, but it’s not from the cooling water. It’s from his words and all that anger they trigger. Don’t do it. Don’t go there.

“You like to keep it a secret. Don’t you, pussy?”

Yefim laughs when I keep my trap shut. He thinks I’m backing down, just like Easton did before his face met the mat. “He’s crying,” he calls out to Easton. “What? Not so tough now?”

That’s where he’s dead wrong. Every muscle I’ve conditioned serves a purpose―to take down those who fuck with me. And right now, Yefim is seriously fucking with me.

“You like to pretend that it’s girls you like, don’t you?” he says. “But that’s not true, is it? Oh, no, that’s not true at all . . .”

I raise my chin, knowing that someone’s not leaving without bleeding, and I’ve bled enough tonight.

Yefim kicks at my calf. “What? Nothing to say? Can’t speak without your boyfriend here?”

“Boyfriend?” Easton asks, laughing. “No fucking way.”

“Yes. Way,” Yefim insists. “Didn’t you know this little pussy takes it up the ass―”

I punch him so hard, I feel his teeth crack against my knuckles. For someone with decades of boxing experience he never saw me coming. But I see Easton flying at me out of the corner of my eye. I toss him over my shoulder, slamming him hard onto the ceramic tile floor. Like in the octagon, I throw myself on top of him, my fists colliding against his skin.

Voices rush forward, telling me to stop. A woman screams, but I don’t stop fighting off the bodies trying to grab me, breaking through the arms wrenching me back. I need to hit him―I need to feel my fists meeting his face―I need to feel something.

God damn it. I need to feel alive.

I don’t want the pain.

I don’t want the terror.

But once more, it’s all I feel.
