Review – For His Eyes Only by Lexi Blake

REVIEW:

I can always count on Lexi Blake to entertain me with her storytelling, but she totally blew me away with her latest Masters and Mercenaries Novel, For His Eyes Only.  I’ve been on pins and needles awaiting the story of Nick and I was not disappointed.  This book had everything….a plot full of twists, turns and secrets, engaging and delightful characters, mind-blowing, earth shattering sex, and a love story so pure and honest, it was almost painful to read about, but impossible to put down.  Sexy, dominant, and damaged, Nick found the love of his life for one night, only to walk away from her and choose a different path, a path which changed his life forever.  Hayley was the first and only woman who gave him the one thing he craved….peace.  I adored Hayley.  I thought her a bit of a quiet mouse at first but she showed herself to be wickedly smart and unbelievably strong.  I loved her straight forward attitude and the sassy banter she would throw at Nick delighted me.  Nick, in true stubborn male fashion, thinks he can fight his attraction to Hayley but that is just impossible.  Their chemistry virtually leaps off the pages of the story and the powerful and raw emotions these two emit literally took my breath way.  Hayley is in trouble and she is relying on Nick to help her….not expecting him to bed her.  The sex scenes are erotic and sensual with the just right right amount of wicked to keep things spicy but not too over-the-top.  The plot was fast moving and steady and to fix Hayley’s problems, we are once again whisked away to other parts of the world, adding an element of hedonistic paradise to the mix.  We do see previous characters in this book (I CAN NOT get enough of Big Tag and Charlotte so this was a treat) and the suspense was killer with a who-done-it I didn’t see coming.  I loved they dynamics of Nick and Hayley’s relationship and even though I wanted to jump into the book and kick Nick in the shins more than once, it was impossible not to be charmed by him.  This love story hooked me from page one and the ending was pure and utter perfection.  There is nothing better than seeing an alpha man fall so madly in love.  Typically, when a series is this long-running, I get bored but Ms. Blake has kept this series fresh and exciting….adding new characters, new destinations, and original plots that keep you guessing from chapter to chapter.  I can’t get enough and I’m dying for the next book already.  I highly recommend this book, and this entire series.  5 Stars.

forhiseyesonly_highresA night he can’t forget

Five years ago, Nick Markovic found himself consumed by his quest for vengeance. The one time he managed to find peace was in the arms of Hayley Dalton. Being with her was like bathing in sunlight, and he ached to feel that again, but he couldn’t. He gave his oath to Hayley’s cousin Desiree, his partner at McKay-Taggart and Knight, that he’d never let his darkness infect Hayley’s innocent world.

A spark she can’t put out

It was years before that Hayley offered everything she had to Nick. After that one amazing night, all she wanted was to be his forever. Unfortunately, Nick’s reaction was to walk away from her and never look back. The warm and caring man she’d discovered was gone, and after Des’s death, he’d only grown colder. But when Hayley finds herself in mortal danger, she’s forced to seek protection from the man who broke her heart.

A flame that threatens to consume them both

Haunted by the women he failed, Nick can’t allow himself to grow close to Hayley again. Running to stay ahead of the powerful forces that endanger their lives, they travel from the lush Garden in London to the glittering lights of Rio. As the threat against her becomes clearer, he realizes that to keep her safe he must confront the demons from his past, even if it costs him a future with the woman he loves.

Nick went back to staring at the report. “Hayley’s not mine. She was Desiree’s cousin. Now she’s my client.”

Who had been tired the night before and that was why she’d said the things she’d said. This morning she’d seemed much more sensible. After she’d had some sleep and a shower and had straightened herself up, she’d been quiet and seemingly reflective. She was very likely embarrassed by what had been said the night before.

I would get safety from murderers and I would get orgasms. I’m sorry, Nicky, you’re going to tell me how that’s a bad deal for me.

He was going to make sure she understood that his protection wasn’t based on whether or not she slept with him.

Because he wasn’t sleeping with her. He couldn’t hurt her that way again.

“So she was your old lover’s cousin,” Owen mused. “The lover you weren’t exclusive with and who wouldn’t marry you. The pretty girl who looks at you like you’re the sun in the sky is her cousin.”

“She looks at me like she would look at man who can save her.”

“I can save her.” Owen’s eyes lit up, his brows waggling. “Maybe she’ll look at me like that.”

Anger flared through his system. “Don’t you dare. I told you I would take care of her.”

His arms crossed over his big chest and Nick knew he’d been had. “Well, that answers the question with more honesty. You can pretend, but you like the girl. And if you honestly don’t then you need to know that the boys got a good look at her last night. If she’s going to be hanging about, she should be ready for some serious male attention.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The lads talked it over last night and decided there’s no dibs on this one. They all saw her at pretty much the same time. They looked over that dead body and saw her walking in the hall and that was when the fighting started. We all sat down and decided no dibs on her. She’ll get to pick. You should know that Sasha and Jax have decided if she picks either of them, they’re willing to share. I don’t play that way. That’s something I do know about meself. No need for you to be telling me that tale. If there’s going to be some sharing in the bedroom, it’s going to be the traditional kind between a man and a woman and her stacked best friend. That’s what I say.”

“You tell those boys to stay away from her or they will be dealing with me. They will not like to be dealing with me. I will put up with many things from them. They can poke all the corpses they like. They can punch each other. I do not care. They touch Hayley and I will be caring.”

“Wow, now you do sound Russian. A scary Russian. Still, I think if you don’t want the girl, shouldn’t she be allowed to choose? Think about it. It could be fun.”

“Are we talking about the lost boys and their battle for the new chick?” Kayla strode in, her hair in a high ponytail. It bounced as she walked, a testament to her seemingly ever-sunny personality. “I had babysitting duty last night and they kept talking about her even after lights out. Bad boys. I had a plan though. I think we make them compete in a beauty pageant. Hayley gets to judge.”

“I’m judging a beauty pageant?” Hayley followed behind Kay, and both women were followed by Charlotte Taggart and Penelope Knight. It looked like Hayley was rapidly being accepted by the women on his team.

That was not necessarily a good thing. The women on his team could create chaos like no others.

“That sounds like fun,” Charlotte said with a smile. “I think we should require Speedos for the bathing suit competition. No boring board shorts. If Hayley’s picking a lover, she needs to see some booty.”

Hayley stopped, her cheeks going the sweetest color of pink. “Wait. What?”

Penelope put a hand on her arm. “They’re teasing you, dear. Don’t worry about it. The lads will be very polite. Though you should expect some suitors while you’re here. Especially if you come down to the dungeon.”

Now he was the one flushing. “Excuse me?”

Hayley shook her head as she joined him at the table. “It’s nothing. I was just talking to the girls. Did you get the report? Penny said the Dallas office had found something.”

He was all too aware that they weren’t alone. Damon and Ian walked in with Brody Carter and Walter Bennett. The four men settled into chairs as the women joined them. Nick held out a chair for Hayley. He would have to remember that he couldn’t leave her alone for a minute or someone would be whispering in her ear, giving her ideas she shouldn’t have.

Like visiting The Garden on a play night.

It wasn’t happening.

Excerpt:

Damn. This was his room. She knew it. It smelled of him. She pressed her ear to the door, wondering if he’d follow her upstairs. She heard nothing.

Throwing herself on the bed, she pulled quilts that smelled of MacLain to her face and rolled to her side. Thoughts of his hands on her, his kisses—it was all she could think about, all she wanted to think about. She was shaking in reaction, and then suddenly she was afraid.

Reality, the bitch that she was, would not be denied. There was nothing more dangerous than wanting something you couldn’t have. What was she doing? She’d been down this road before. She knew better.

Marnie threw her feet over the edge of the bed, patted the quilt a few times, and then forced herself to do what was necessary. She walked to the bedroom door and locked it for her own good. MacLain’s, too. Then she lay back in bed. She told herself she wasn’t waiting to see if he would follow her. She wasn’t waiting to see if he wanted to continue that crazy, passionate embrace they’d started in the kitchen. She wasn’t. Because then she’d have to care if he didn’t come to the door. She’d have to mourn her fantasies, two months in the making, and set them free despite knowing she and MacLain would be attached at the hip for the foreseeable future. She wasn’t sure which was worse, him not coming, or her sending him away.

Who was she kidding? If he didn’t come, she’d die.

It took five minutes. He tried the knob, found it was locked, and then he knocked. She wanted to open the door. She wanted a lot in life, but there were some things she’d learned weren’t for people like Marnie. Reach for it, and you got burned. Dane MacLain was one of those things. She’d rather burn for him now than be burned by him later.

He didn’t knock again. But once was enough for her. That once would keep her warm, would fuel her dreams and be consolation for things that couldn’t be. She gathered the quilt to her chest and curled up into a ball, wondering how she’d gotten herself in this mess.

Chapter One

“I can’t believe it’s over,” Jessica Beck whispered to her brother-in-law. “I never thought it would end like this.”

“I’m still in total shock,” Keegan replied—his voice low. “Daniel wasn’t a spy.”

“He was a lot of things, but definitely not a spy.”

Her husband, Daniel, had been convicted of espionage while on a photo shoot for News Weekly. He’d always been a manipulator, playing games with people’s lives. Odd, that before he died, he’d lost all control of his own.

She recalled the scene of his execution in a Middle East village shown on a viral video. They had warned the images were graphic, but still she had watched. She released a pent up breath that came out in short, broken sobs. “It was horrible.”

“I hate you saw that.” Keegan’s hand remained on her back, rubbing gently.

For the last hour, she had innocently lain in Keegan’s arms, waiting for her pain to ease. She gripped his shoulders, her face pressed into his chest. She needed his strength. His strong arms held her tightly against him as he too grieved for his younger brother.

Until now, it had been over four years since Keegan had spoken to her. His last words had been said at her and Daniel’s wedding.

Congratulations. You deserve one another.

After their wedding, Keegan joined the Army and had only been back home three months but in time to see Daniel at Christmas.

It surprised her he’d stopped by to console her. Now here he was, holding her. It was as if they’d gone back in time. They’d been high school sweethearts until the day his youngest brother, Michael died from a snowmobile accident. She’d been driving. She was the one Keegan blamed. Then when she’d started dating Daniel, his resentment grew.

He had had two brothers, and she’d managed to take them both, leaving him with nothing.

Had he finally forgiven her?

Emotions swelled in her over the loss of Michael, Daniel, and the relationship she’d once cherished with Keegan. The Beck brothers had played a major role in her life in one way or another.

A whimper escaped her lips, and she gasped for breath.

Keegan patted her back. “I know it hurts. I hurt too. Let it out, Jessica. I’m here for you.”

She squeezed him tighter. “I feel so guilty.”

“Shh…you shouldn’t.”

“But, you don’t understand.” She sniffed a few times, then cleared her throat. “Daniel was so hateful the last time he was home, I wished he’d never come back. And now he’s dead.”

“Oh, Jess. That doesn’t mean you caused it. Daniel knew the risks involved.” He paused. “He could be a real ass at times. Did you tell my mom?”

“I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. He wouldn’t even sleep in the same room with me. I tried so hard to be a good wife and to please him. But he wouldn’t let me.”

“Daniel was my brother, and I never could figure him out. He didn’t deserve you.”

But there was another reason she’d made the fatal wish. One she wouldn’t tell Keegan. During the interview with a young woman photographer who’d been on the trip with Daniel, Jessica realized the truth. This woman had his love and made him happy. This sleek, exotic, beautiful woman pleased him in bed, not her.

And now that he would never return to Alaska, guilt blended with grief to increase her pain.

“I didn’t love Daniel, but I did care about him. I would’ve never wished him the agonizing torture he’d endured or the brutal execution that became his fate.”

“I know, Jess.”

When a trembling sigh escaped her, Keegan held her closer.

The late hour didn’t matter.

For two months since Daniels abduction, she’d lived in limbo. It had happened no sooner than his team had crossed the border.

Earlier that evening the news media had pursued her as though she were a celebrity, stalking her and shoving microphones in her face. But Keegan had made them leave, even threatening several with bodily harm.

Light flickered from the lamp beside the bed, bothering her tired, sensitive eyes. She’d intended to replace the bulb but kept forgetting to.

The only sounds in the house were the rhythmic ticking from the clock and the thermostat switching on and off.

With her face against him, she listened to Keegan’s heart beating. It beat out the song of life. This reminded her of when they used to lay in the hammock together as teens.

“It’s all right, Jess. You’re going to get through this,” he whispered, his warm breath softly caressing her ear. His mouth lingered.

He smelled like wood in a fireplace, evergreen, and the scent of a virile man. It felt so right to be in his arms.

Finally, the light bulb blew, leaving them in darkness.

In those dark moments, her lips found Keegan’s.

The first kiss revealed light affection.

Comforting. So comforting.

Jessica’s pain eased slightly.

The kisses grew in intensity, driven by her grief.

She couldn’t stop touching him as her hands kneaded his shoulders and arms. He kissed down her neck before finding her mouth again.

Stop the pain.

Just stop the damn pain.

The deeper his tongue swept the depths of her mouth, the more her grief and guilt diminished. His large, rough hands eased over her sensitive skin as he pushed her flannel gown up over her head, leaving her naked. Sexual impulses surged through her. Her hands fumbled with his belt, then she unsnapped his pants.

She couldn’t think.

Refused to think.

She needed to feel loved, but most of all she needed to feel alive.

The touch of his lips to her nipple made her moan as she raked her fingers through his dark hair. The desire that hummed between her thighs intensified. “I need you, Keegan.”

“Oh, God, Jessica. I can’t stop.”

As his mouth returned to hers, he mounted her, urgently parting her legs with his knee. She raised her hips guiding him. He thrust forward, driving deep inside her, causing her to whimper.

Their flesh heated as his pelvis pounded against her. The heat from his muscular body made her skin sizzle.

Sweet, hungry passion drove Jessica until they both cried out in ecstasy.

Their passionate cries immediately transformed into sounds of distress as Jessica acknowledged what had just happened.

Keegan broke into deep sobs. His body shook violently, and he cried out like a wounded animal. He rolled over on his back, pushing her aside, draping his arm over his eyes as he grieved.

Her own body fell limp like seaweed, drained of any energy from the despair that consumed her.

Oh, my God, what have I done?

Guilt and remorse pushed upward from Jessica’s stomach to her throat, making her gag.  Adulteress.

No. . . .no, I’m not.

But her reassurance didn’t stop her from feeling like a sordid seductress.

Poor Keegan. What must he be feeling?

Keegan, are you all right?” He inhaled a deep ragged breath.

“No, I’m not. I just had sex with my brother’s wife. Shit, he’s not even buried yet.”

Release Blitz – Justice by Rie Warren

Title: Justice
Series: Bad Boys of X-Ops Book II
Author: Rie Warren
Genre: Erotic romance, humor, thriller, suspense, military, action/adventure
Release Date: April 25, 2016

From the world of bad boys of Retribution MC comes a deliciously dangerous, scandalously sexy, four part series!

Good girl versus Bad boy. Southern charm comes head-to-head with military grit. They say opposites attract. That’s an understatement where Justice and Lawless are concerned.

JUSTICE

Let’s face it. I’ve got a bad rep with the ladies. I’m a rough-talking, smooth-loving, international playboy—yeah right, whatever—and an X-Ops specialist. Sure, I’m hiding a secret or two. Who isn’t? That’s the least of my concerns when I’m called in to lead an infiltrate-and-retrieve mission.

I’ve got my head in the game—the one firmly attached to my shoulders. An American embassy overseas is under siege, and I’m expecting to rescue the ambassador and his daughter, a stereotypical geeky damsel in distress, Matilda Lawless.

Caught in the crossfire between explosive danger and wild desire, I’m in for the shock of my life.

TILLY

I’m not looking for any man to save me. I’m pretty damn capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much. I have a successful career and was practically born and bred on a gun range, even if I can’t bake a perfect biscuit to save my life like a good southern woman should.

But there’s just something about that hardcore operative called Justice. He’s haunted and lonely, and I know that pain inside and out. It doesn’t hurt one little bit he’s been blessed with more than his fair share of good looks, plus a body that would make any red-blooded woman drool.

Barricaded inside the embassy, under my father’s shrewd eyes, I intend to have Justice no matter how many times he says he’s not good enough. I see the way he watches me. With dirty, sexy, hungry lust.

Fighting is what Justice does. Now I need him to fight for me.

Warning: Graphic sex, graphic action, graphic language. Triple X caution.

“I think you’d best get some rest, Matilda.” My voice came out low but razor sharp, my words blunt and unmuffled.

If I had to be an asshole to her to maintain the necessary distance I would, because the suddenness of wanting her so damn much was painful.

And futile.

And stupid beyond belief.

“Tsk.” She waltzed into the room all bare, tan legs and warm, soft scent.

Her fingers flicked at my forehead, and I reared back in surprise.

“Tilly, Ah told you. Only my grandmother has ever called me Matilda, and she’s so stiff I think she was molded into the apron she put on after she got married in 1948. I am not a Matilda.”

First of all, I couldn’t believe she’d flicked me. Me! A goddamn ex-marine and special operative.

And second, a grin crept up one side of my mouth, but I swallowed down the laugh that wanted to follow.

“What’s that?” Tilly pointed at the notebook resting in my lap.

“Uh.” Fuck. I’d completely forgotten about the damn thing. “Nothing.” I quickly rolled it up and stashed it in my pocket. “Bullshit on pages. Gonna make a bonfire out of it later.”

I pulled out a throwing star I always flipped back and forth between my fingers. It flashed like lightning, throwing sparks of light across the room.

A much more manly pursuit.

Jesus. I am losing it.

Maybe I need some sleep after all.

I groaned.

Tilly plopped right down beside me with upraised legs, leaning the back of her head against the wall. “God, but it’s hot in here.”

Plucking at her shirt that ballooned before settling back against the firm round hills of her tits, she rolled her head toward me. “Justin, right?”

I met her eyes for a moment to see the twinkle in her irises.

“Justice.” I growled.

“Justice? Hmm. Justice what?”

“I’m not giving out that information.” I made my frown as formidable as ever, but I could tell she didn’t give a shit.

She leaned close enough her warm breath caressed my ear. “Who would I tell?”

“Chase . . . Justice Chase.” The words tumbled from my mouth.

She clapped a hand over her mouth to withhold a giggle. “Well, that’s not so bad, is it? Imagine if it was Chase Justice.”

“It’s not that.” Maybe a little. “No one’s supposed to know . . . who I really am.”

“Lawless and Justice, huh?” Her hand found my forearm, and her fingers squeezed the steel cable muscles. “Sounds like an outlaw movie. The next big blockbuster. I promise to keep your secret, Justice Chase.”

Spunky Tilly somehow lifted all the fatigue from my body, and I aimed a feral grin at her.

Her eyelashes fluttered. Her smile became a softer curve of her lips.

Her fingers traced all the way down to my wrist where a pulse pounded a heavy beat before she skimmed her hand to my thigh and down to the floor between us.

She made my body thump and my blood race. She made sensations fire like a network of heat to the center of my groin.

Maybe it was just the day, the night, the adrenaline rush that hadn’t worn off and probably wouldn’t. The same thing happened with every op—unleashed energy I usually slaked afterward by fucking. Fucking hard. Randomly. Anonymously.

Here there was no one to screw. Except Tilly.

There was no escaping her presence either, and, man, did I want to fuck the living daylights out of her.

I lifted one knee and casually—oh so casually—crossed a forearm over it so my hand nearly dangled in my lap, obscuring my growing hard-on from view.

“You should stay in your quarters, Matilda.” My voice sounded like gravel, and I shifted again.

“Is that a direct order, sir?”

The USA Today bestselling author of Outside the Lines once again explores love on the edge in an explosive new romance about obsession, betrayal, and a killer attraction.

Lee Delgado never planned on falling in love with the irresistible Oliver Savoca, son of a Chicago crime lord. Considering that their families are rivals, she knew it could never work. And now that both their fathers have been nabbed on racketeering charges, any real chance at a future with the man she loves has been shot to hell. But a greater blow is yet to come.

Not only does Lee learn that a contract is out on her life, she has reason to believe that Oliver is behind the devastating betrayal. Now she’s working closely—very closely—with Federal Agent Sean Callahan to help bring her man down. But however she’s come to feel about Callahan, Lee is still deeply, hopelessly, unabashedly in love with Oliver.

Where that fearless love takes Lee next is beyond her control—but the risk is worth every beat of her heart.

Tour Titles 1

I want Lee to know, no matter where she goes, I will find her.

At the thought of her betrayal, rage rises up and wraps like an iron cloak around my heart, threatening to crush any bit of humanity left there. I close my eyes and hold my breath until it passes.

And I see her as she was before everything that came after—that first day of business law class at Kellogg, nearly two years ago.

She was starting her first year. I was in my second. I was already seated near Angela Bagglio, who I had a passing interest in due to her loose family ties to the Delgado organization. Her brother was a wiseguy wannabe, little more than a glorified gofer within the Delgado machine. But I’d discovered, sometimes it was the smallest details that led to the largest victories.

When Lee Delgado sashayed into the classroom, I’d like to say I was unaffected. I’d like to believe I was in complete control of everything that happened then and after.

But I’d be kidding myself.

Her bright hazel eyes surveyed the room, and when they caught for a second as they passed over me, I felt a shift in gravity itself. There were times reading nuances in expressions and actions was all that came between me and a slug in my head. That hitch in her perusal of the room left no doubt she was aware who I was.

From that second on, I was helpless to take my eyes off her.

Her sandy brown waves cascaded over the shoulders of her cream-colored silk blouse to an open collar that hung loose, revealing a hint of cleavage. Her burgundy pencil skirt hugged the round curves of her hips and ass and ended above the knee, giving me a glimpse of a pair of toned thighs and calves. She had a killer body and knew it. I had to respect a woman who knew her strengths and wasn’t afraid to use them to her advantage.

She took a seat in my row, but on the opposite side of the classroom. I was barely coherent when the professor started lecturing. I couldn’t tell you the first thing he said.

As she listened, she lifted a hand and combed through her waves with her fingers, separating out a strand and twirling it around her finger. A rush shuddered from my tailbone up my spine to my brain, and even though I had no clue why, that was the moment I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stay away.

The rest, as they say, is history.

If she thinks she can hide from me, she’s got another thing coming.

Mob controlled gambling has always been a huge racket, with better payouts because we don’t pay taxes like the legal betting sites. Back in the day, bookies were involved and actual cash changed hands. Now nearly everything is electronic. Bets are collected directly from our clients’ online accounts and payouts are distributed back into them. Payout is calculated after each event based on outcome versus the spread. It’s one of the parts of my job that I truly enjoy.             I’m always in the program, tweaking and modifying. But, suddenly, the week before Christmas, two days after Lee and I returned from our weekend in Aspen, I noticed the spread didn’t factor anymore and our payouts went through the roof. I thought maybe I’d screwed something up and tried to get into the program to check it. Ended up throwing my laptop against the wall when my pass code wouldn’t get me in.

It took me the next two days, and the fact that Lee wasn’t answering my texts or calls, to put together what had happened. Though I’m not sure exactly how she managed it, I know it had to have been her who hacked into my program and changed the payout ratios. I’ve looked at it from every angle and there are no other feasible possibilities. And it makes sense. I had an ulterior motive when we started hooking up, and I had no doubt she had one of her own. But as we got deeper into each other, things shifted and I lost focus. I let down my guard and gave her too much, and she took advantage of the opening.

I knew I wouldn’t be seeing her over the holidays because her siblings were all coming back to the family home in Wilmette, just outside of Chicago, for Christmas. It took me another day to decide I had no choice but to go there.

But when I got to the house, the place was swarming with cops and Feds, and yellow police tape was strung across the pillars at the front door. The reports the next day said it was believed the Delgados had fled to Europe after a “gangland style attack” on their home.

The online gambling leg of our business has been bleeding cash at the rate of nearly a hundred grand a month since Lee fucked with the program. Every month it gets worse as word spreads of our big payouts. The guy who designed and encrypted the program is dead; a casualty of my father’s wrath when he made the mistake of telling Victor he’d corrected a system glitch that had cost us a couple hundred grand over the first year of implementation. I’ve done everything I can to break Lee’s pass code, but considering the illegal nature of the account, and the fact that I couldn’t enlist anyone who might report back to Victor what happened, my resources to resolve the issue have been severely limited.

So I put my time and energy into another avenue. Finding Lee.

Like everyone else in Chicago, I assumed that my father was responsible for the contract on Lee and her family. I talked to his guys. Tried to see if any of them had a bead on the Delgados’ location. I couldn’t find anyone who was even looking.

So, as much as I dreaded it, I went straight to the source.

I was dead to my father. He’d made that clear. But that day, for the first time since I’d crossed him, Victor looked at me with pride in his eyes when he asked, “You purchase that special delivery for our friends up in Wilmette?”

And that’s when I knew it wasn’t us. It’s also when I knew I was a dead man unless I could find a way out of this mess on my own.

So I looked harder for Lee, dug a little deeper into the Delgado family tree. I didn’t find her, but I managed to stumble on some other useful information during my search. And then, finally, the stroke of luck that led me here: Rob showing up in Chicago.

I’ve been able to keep everything under the rug since she left, but underground betting has always been the Savoca business’s bread and butter. If Victor or anyone else in the organization discovers the hemorrhage of cash that our gambling ring has become, it’s my head my loving pop will want on a spike.

I told the guys I had some personal business in Vegas; gave Al a direct order to park his ass at my apartment and not to move until I got back. I took a flight to Vegas, and from there, traveled to Florida on an ID I pinched off of a guy we rolled in Little Italy for not making book. He’s dead now, courtesy of Al, so he won’t be divulging my alter ego to anyone.

My family doesn’t know this particular alias. They’d have a hard time tracking me. Once I find Lee, things should move pretty fast. But I have to find her first.

So here I am.
